Marine omega-3s

Rimfrost krill oil is a very rich source of marine omega-3s

Rimfrost krill oil contains the marine omega-3s DHA and EPA, which are critical to health and avoidance of disease.

Omega-3 supplementation can help protect from obesity, diabetes, cardiovascular disease, cancer, neurological diseases and help support an effective immune system.

Why are omega-3s important?

Omega-3s like DHA and EPA are essential for your body to function properly. They can be incorporated in cell membranes and hormones that regulate blood clotting and the movement of blood around your body. They are also part of the inflammation process, helping to protect you from infection and injury.

Your body can’t make DHA and EPA from scratch, so they must be part of a balanced diet. Omega-3s can be found in chia, flax seeds, leafy vegetables as well as certain types of fish, beef and lamb. Krill oil is a particularly rich source of DHA and EPA because in krill oil they are bound to phospholipids making them easily absorbed by your body.

Phospholipids in krill oil

Omega-3s in krill oil are easily absorbed by the body

A benefit of krill oil is that its DHA and EPA are bound to phospholipids, meaning they are easily absorbed by the body, boosting your body’s ability to use them.

In other oils, particularly plant and animal-based ones, the omega oils are bound to triglycerides. Triglycerides are less easily absorbed then phospholipids, so are not as efficient at delivering DHA and EPA.

Did you know that the dark red color in Rimfrost krill oil comes from the antioxidant astaxanthin which is found naturally in krill?
Astaxanthin

Our krill oil contains a natural high content of the powerful antioxidant Astaxanthin

Astaxanthin is a type of molecule called a carotenoid. Carotenoids are present in fruit and vegetables and thought to be associated with a number of health benefits.

Astaxanthin is known as an antioxidant because of the special properties it has. Antioxidants help counteract oxidative stress, a process that damages cells and can play a role in a cancer, cardiovascular disease, diabetes, Parkinson’s, Alzheimer’s and some eye diseases.

When consumed in fruit or vegetables astaxanthin can be hard for your body to use. It can be brought as a single dietary supplement, but depending on the formulation it may also be hard for your body to use in this form. When consumed in an oil-based formulation it is easier for your body to use astaxanthin.

A benefit of Rimfrost krill oil is as well as containing marine omega-3 phospholipids and choline, it also contains high levels of naturally occurring astaxanthin. In Rimfrost’s krill oil-based formulation astaxanthin is easy for your body to use. It gives our krill oil its red colour and helps to stabilise the krill oil leading to a nutrient-rich final product.

Choline

Choline is an essential nutrient

Choline is an essential nutrient – officially recognised by the Institute of Medicine in 1998. The most commonly dietary source of choline is egg yolk, however, many people may not be getting enough choline in their diets.

Choline contributes to normal liver function

A choline-deficiency is associated with liver damage and fatty liver (hepatosteatosis). These effects can be reversed by consuming dietary choline.

Choline contributes to normal lipid metabolism

Choline has a role in lipid and cholesterol metabolism (metabolism means changing food and drink into energy). Choline is also involved in cell signalling, the process in which molecules send messages around the body. A choline-deficiency may have an impact on neurological diseases.

Protein

High concentration of essential amino acids

Krill is an excellent nutritional source of a broad range of various amino acids including essential amino acids.

The amino acids are highly bioavailable as they are present as small peptides with a typical size below 1000 Da. The product will dissolve and mix quickly in water and can therefore be used as an ingredient in a range of nutritional products.
