Health promotion
through nutrition

Premium functional marine ingredients contribute to health promotion through nutrition for our beloved furry family members. Antarctic krill has many benefits for pets’ health, in addition to improving palatability in many products.

Palatability

A crucial factor in the success of pet products

Pet parents want to provide healthy and tasty meals for their dogs and cats. Krill ingredients are known to enhance palatability and provide health benefits in pet diets.

A pet's appetite is largely influenced by the taste and smell of its food. A palatable pet food or treat can encourage a pet to eat more, ensuring that they receive the proper nutrition they need to maintain good health

More about palatability of krill in pet products

Palatability is an important factor in pet food and treats. It encourages food intake, reduces waste, builds brand loyalty and provides positive reinforcement.

By prioritizing palatability, pet food companies can create products that pets and pet owners will enjoy and benefit from.

Krill ingredients are generally considered to be palatable to pets, and most dogs and cats enjoy the taste of krill-based products. Contact us to learn more about palatability trials and our experience with different krill ingredients in different pet food applications.

Phospholipid Omega-3s

A richer source of
Omega-3s

A benefit of krill is that its EPA and DHA are bound to phospholipids, meaning they are easily absorbed by the body.

Why are Omega-3s important?

Omega-3 fatty acids are essential nutrients that play a crucial role in maintaining good health. They are called "essential" because the dog and cat body cannot, or have limited ability, to produce them on their own and need to get them through the diet or supplements.

EPA (eicosapentaenoic acid) and DHA (docosahexaenoicacid) are two types of Omega-3 fatty acids. They play important roles in the inflammatory process in both humans and pets by reducing the production of pro-inflammatory cytokines and chemokines, modulating the activity of immune cells. This is why they are often recommended as a natural anti-inflammatory supplement for various inflammatory conditions.

Phospholipid Omega-3s are a type of Omega-3 fatty acid that are bound to phospholipids, which are essential components of cell membranes. EPA and DHA in the form of phospholipids are less available as energy and more efficiently incorporated in cell membranes where they influence pet health positively. Unlike triglyceride-bound Omega-3s, phospholipid Omega-3s are more easily absorbed and utilized by the body.

In summary, Omega-3s are essential nutrients that play a critical role in maintaining good health and preventing chronic diseases. Phospholipid Omega-3s are a highly bioavailable and beneficial form of Omega-3 fatty acids.

Phospholipid Omega-3s are effective in increasing the Omega-3 index. Omega-3 fatty acids are known to combat inflammation and offer several health benefits for many organs and the immune system.

Krill paste containing  approx. 500 ppm astaxanthin
Astaxanthin

A natural high content of the powerful antioxidant Astaxanthin

Astaxanthin belongs to a group of compounds called carotenoids that act as natural pigments.

Astaxanthin, provided through food, is the red pigment that gives animals like salmon, shrimp, and flamingos their distinct pink colour. But don’t worry, dogs and cats won’t turn pink if they eat it.

There are many good reasons to provide pets astaxanthin in their diets. Astaxanthin is a powerful antioxidant designed to protect the cell. The antioxidant strength of astaxanthin is more potent than commonly used antioxidants like vitamin E and C. Unlike some other antioxidants, it never becomes a pro-oxidant in the body. Astaxanthin is often referred to as «the king of carotenoids» for its unique properties that fight free radicals and oxidative stress in cells.

Natural sources of astaxanthin are often preferred in the pet segment, and krill ingredients are excellent sources of this protective antioxidant. Antioxidants support optimal health for pets by supporting the cells, the immune system and helping fight inflammation.

Choline

Choline is essential for pet health

Choline plays a crucial role in many different body functions including brain, nerve function, liver function, and muscle control. Choline is found in many different foods that are commonly used in pet diets and are also added to many commercial pet foods as a nutritional supplement.

Krill is a natural source of choline

The majority of the choline in pet bodies is found in the specialized fat molecules phospholipids, in which the most common is phosphatidylcholine. Krill has high levels of phospholipids – and especially phosphatidylcholine. Krill is a good natural source as it contains approximately 5–6% choline (of total fat).

Choline deficiency

In pets, choline deficiency can lead to a variety of health problems, including poor growth, muscle weakness, and liver disease. Choline deficiency can also lead to neurological problems.

Protein

High quality marine proteins with high digestibility

Krill is an excellent sustainable nutritional source of a broad range of various amino acids including essential amino acids.

The protein in our krill ingredients for pets are highly bioavailable present as free amino acids, peptides and intact proteins. The degree of hydrolysis varies between products and the majority of water-soluble proteins have a molecular weight below 1000Da. Our krill ingredients are good sources of several essential amino acids, especially Lysine, Threonine, Methionine, and Arginine that are also reflecting well the ideal protein composition in feed for puppies and kittens.
