Our impact areas

To guide us in taking meaningful and impactful action we have performed a materiality assessment. The assessment revealed focus areas where we as a company can make a positive impact, either by improving our performance or by enhancing opportunities.

Our sustainability impact:

Human health, nutrition and wellbeing

Krill oil is rich in omega-3 fatty acids, specifically EPA (eicosapentaenoic acid) and DHA (docosahexaenoic acid). These essential fats play a crucial role in supporting heart health, reducing inflammation, and promoting brain function.

Krill oil’s unique structure allows for superior absorption as the phospholipid form of omega-3s in krill oil, making it more effective in delivering nutrients to our cells.

Krill oil also contains astaxanthin, a potent antioxidant, protecting cells from oxidative damage, supporting skin health, and contribute to eye health.

Studies suggest that krill oil may alleviate joint pain and stiffness due to its anti-inflammatory properties and most importantly, research indicates that krill oil have beneficial effects on hearth health by improving lipid profiles (increasing HDL (good) cholesterol and reducing LDL (bad) cholesterol levels).

Krill oil also contains choline, an essential nutrient, important for normal lipid metabolism and liver function

Animal health and welfare

Antarctic krill provides a unique combination of nutrients, making it a natural superfood for pets.

Packed with omega-3 fatty acids, astaxanthin, choline and proteins, krill ingredients offer a myriad of health benefits for pets in addition to improving palatability

Used as a functional ingredient in pet diets, krill can contribute to health and wellbeing by promoting a shiny coat and healthy skin, supporting joint health and cognitive function and enhancing overall wellbeing in cats and dogs at every life stage.

Food security and a sustainable aquaculture

Aquaculture is vital for global food security and human nutrition. Our krill hydrolysate offers solutions to aquaculture’s sustainability challenges. By adding it to aquaculture feed, we can help improve aquaculture production efficiency and animal welfare. Krill hydrolysate enhance the palatability of feed, which again increases growth rate, reduce animal mortality and reduce feed waste. Moreover, the taste enhancing properties improve formulation flexibility and allows for reduced dependence on fishmeal.

Respecting biodiversity and ecosystems

A thriving Antarctic ecosystem is crucial for our business, both now and in the long term. We deeply respect the role of krill within this delicate ecosystem.

Our approach is to sustainably harvest only what we need, with precision, minimizing our impact.

We are deeply commited to sustainability. The annual krill catch represents just 0.3% of the total krill biomass. Stringent regulations by the Commission for the Conservation of Antarctic Marine Living Resources (CCAMLR) govern our commercial krill harvesting in FAO area 48. In addition we are member of ARK (The Association of Responsible Krill harvesting companies) which promotes the best practices in the fishery including the adoption of 100% independent international observer coverage. Learn more about ARK here.

Our state-of-the-art fishing vessel adheres to the highest environmental standards. It holds clean design notation and complies with the IMO polar code for environmental performance.
